The Kentucky Derby is on Saturday, May 4th at the Churchill Downs fields in Louisville, Kentucky. The “Run for the Roses” will be the 145th that Churchill Downs has seen. The official start time for the Kentucky Derby is at 6:50 pm. NBC will be broadcasting live on TV and NBC Sports will air the race too, also live. The Kentucky Derby festivities begin on Thursday, May 2nd and NBC Sports Network is broadcasting the Kentucky Derby access from 4-6 pm. Each day on NBC Sports Network there will be some sort of Derby broadcasting, including May 3, which is the Kentucky Oaks race.

The Kentucky Derby will be seen by a TV audience of over 20 million people. The host of the race, Churchill Downs, is the world’s most legendary racetrack. It has been hosting the Kentucky Derby since 1875.

Twenty horses, ages 3 and older will compete in the Kentucky Derby. This is a rather large group of horses this year. The field is usually around eight for horse races. The winning purse is $3 million for the Kentucky Derby.

The Kentucky Derby expects about 155,000 people. It is the longest continually held sport in America. It is one of the most prestigious races in the world. It is often called “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports.” It takes about 2 minutes to begin the race and end at the finish line. It is the first race in the Triple Crown Series of Thoroughbred racing. It is followed by the Preakness Stakes and then the Belmont Stakes race.

The Kentucky Derby is called the “Run for the Roses” because the winner of this race will receive a garland of over 400 red roses that are sewn into a garland. The center rose on the garland pointing up symbolizes the struggle and heart one must have in order to win the Kentucky Derby.
